The Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich, responded to Mauricio Macri regarding the escapes of prisoners from police stations in the City, blaming the City authorities for not building the prison that was to be completed in 2020. Bullrich mentioned that for five years the work was halted, generating more costs for the inhabitants of Buenos Aires.
In the statement addressed to Macri, Bullrich emphasized that in 2018, Macri as president signed an agreement for the City to take over the Devoto land in exchange for building a prison in Marcos Paz. The initial cost was 60 million dollars from the national government, with the expectation that the City would contribute the remaining 70 million.
The minister indicated that since they began their management, more than 6,000 prisoners have been transferred from police stations in the City of Buenos Aires. Bullrich lamented that the City authorities decided to change the company responsible for the construction of the prison, delaying the awarding until December 2024.
Bullrich recalled that there was a possibility offered to transfer prisoners to the south and build modules on Federal Penitentiary Service land at the beginning of Jorge Macri's administration, a proposal that was rejected. The minister urged compliance with commitments and to sign the transfer of the Federal Penitentiary Service and the prisoners.
The controversy has arisen due to the accumulation of prisoners in police stations since 2020, creating an overcrowding problem. Bullrich concluded her message urging to take responsibility and resolve the situation, highlighting that signing the agreement is necessary to address the issue effectively.
